48Hr Film Project Entry – “Cursed Ground”

DareFusion and NAS Productions combine with the Bui Brothers and Paul Dateh to create a top 13 film for the 48Hr Film Project in San Diego.

Creating a film in 48Hrs is an amazing challenge and a great way to force yourself to focus intensely on just what’s important.  If you’re not familiar with 48Hr Film Project, it goes like this: Teams are formed by both experienced groups comprised of commercial film or video workers and one or two people with a camera and the desire for little sleep.  On Friday night at 7:00PM one member of your team draws a genre from a hat.  It could be anything from comedy or drama to superhero film or western.  Then the festival director announces 3 elements that are required to be included in your film; a prop, a character, and a line of dialog.

This year we drew Western or Musical.  We went with Western and luckily this didn’t have to be classic Westernso long as it was shot in the style of a western.  The required elements were a crayon, a character named Amos or Amy Belanger who was a Historian, and the line “That’s not what I meant.”

Our entry is above (with a few minor touch ups).  We made it by the skin of our teeth as they say in the South.  I have to say the thing that impressed me the most, other than the beauty of the shots our team got, was the work of Paul Dateh.  He worked ini real time with the editing staff at a make-shift workstation where he watched a segment of the movie and then played keyboard, violin, or both to score it with music that matched the emotion.  It was and is fascinating.  Just watch and listen and you’ll realize the music gets you way before the scene does.

Special thanks to all of the cast and crew who worked a crazy weekend to make this film so awesome.
