The Activist (2011)

OVERVIEW

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which a team of creative masochists make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours.  On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.

Producing a film for the 48 Hour Film Festival is a challenge, but it is also a fantastic learning experience.  Probably the best gift to be gained from the event is the necessity to cut the crap.  With long shoots and extended post production schedules its easy to get mired by all of the poossibilities and attempts at achieving ”perfection.”  Making a film in 48 hours forces you to be the best you can on the first try with no second chances, and with the knowledge that and audience of critics and peers will view what you have done.  That’s an experience worth having.

Synopsis

Corporate executives bent on environmental destruction learn the hard way that it only takes one person to make a change.

Production Notes

2011 was another great year for the 48 Hour Film Project.  The group collaboration was helmed by Zachary Lindsey and overcame numerous obstacles to be executed on time.  We had a strong production team that included William Turner, David Moore, and Austin Ahlberg, not to mention a talented cast who were just asking for a challenge.  So, it was no big surprise when the weekend called for… rain.

Our first location was a remote location in the woods that made little comfort available from the weather.  Nevertheless we powered on and not only got great looking shots, but also were able to leverage the rain and make it “our characters problem.”  This is a technique you learn early on in filmmaking as a means to overcome unexpected difficulties that are bound to occur when you least expect them.  Kevin Smith had an interesting way of handling a similar production difficulty with his Film Clerks.

Via Wikipedia: He was only allowed to film in the store at night while it was closed (from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.), hence the running gag of someone jamming gum in the padlocks and the steel shutters remaining closed; otherwise, it would seem odd that it was dark outside during all the daytime scenes.
